Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) is a large-scale, multiple-choice and short-answer mathematics contest run annually by the Australian Maths Trust. It is open to students from primary through secondary school (Years 3–12), with papers tailored to different year levels. The competition focuses on problem-solving, logical reasoning, and creative thinking rather than routine calculation, and is offered in both online and paper formats via schools. High school students typically sit either the Intermediate or Senior paper, depending on their year level. The AMC is held on a set date each year, and students compete individually while being supervised by their school. Participants receive detailed performance reports, certificates ranging from Participation to High Distinction, and may become eligible for follow-on enrichment programs and more advanced contests. Taking part helps students deepen their mathematical understanding, benchmark themselves nationally and internationally, and strengthen academic profiles for university applications.
