BBC Young Musician Competition

BBC Young Musician is a prestigious biennial competition run by the BBC to discover and showcase outstanding young classical and jazz instrumentalists from across the United Kingdom. Founded in 1978, it features categories such as strings, keyboard, woodwind, brass, and percussion, with rounds broadcast on BBC television and radio. There is also a separate BBC Young Jazz Musician competition. The competition is open to young performers who are UK residents and below a specified age limit (typically under 18 for the main classical contest), rather than defined by school grade. Participants progress through regional and category auditions to reach televised category finals and a grand final, performing with professional accompanists and often with full orchestra.
