ESU Schools' Mace Debating Competition

The **ESU Schools' Mace** is the English-Speaking Union’s flagship school debating competition, and one of the oldest and largest debating tournaments in the UK. It uses the British Parliamentary-style (Mace format) of prepared debate, where teams argue motions on current affairs, public policy, ethics, and global issues. Schools first compete in regional rounds, with successful teams progressing to regional finals and then the national finals. The competition is open to secondary schools across the UK, typically with teams of two students representing their school. Participants develop critical thinking, public speaking, research, and argumentation skills, as well as confidence in articulating ideas under time pressure. Taking part in the Schools' Mace also connects students to a wider debating community and can strengthen applications for university and future opportunities in law, politics, and public service.
