European Land-Robot Trial (ELROB) Competition

The European Land-Robot Trial (ELROB) is a field robotics competition where teams test unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) in demanding, realistic outdoor scenarios such as search and rescue, reconnaissance, and logistics. Hosted at varying European locations every two years (with separate military and civilian editions), ELROB evaluates how well robots can operate in real-world terrain and mission conditions rather than in simplified laboratory environments. ELROB is primarily aimed at universities, research institutes, industry teams, and defense-related groups, so high school students typically participate only as part of a larger institutional team or under the guidance of a university or professional mentor. For students able to join such teams, ELROB offers exposure to cutting-edge robotics, systems engineering, sensing and autonomy, and human–robot interaction, as well as a chance to network with experts in European robotics research and industry.
