National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo)

National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) is an annual, online poetry writing initiative held every April, inspired by National Novel Writing Month. Founded in 2003 by poet Maureen Thorson, NaPoWriMo invites participants around the world to try writing a poem every day for 30 days. The central site, NaPoWriMo.net, posts daily prompts, features participating poetry blogs, and offers encouragement throughout the month. NaPoWriMo is open to anyone—students, teachers, and independent writers of all ages—and there is no formal registration, fee, or judging process. Because it’s a self-directed challenge rather than a juried contest, it’s best viewed as a practice- and portfolio-building opportunity for high school writers rather than a traditional competition with awards. Participants can post their poems on personal blogs or keep them private, gaining daily writing discipline, creativity, and a substantial body of new work by month’s end.
