# Tennessee Governor's School for the Sciences and Engineering The Governor's School for the Sciences and Engineering (GSSE) is one of Tennessee's state-sponsored Governor's Schools, hosted each summer by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Roughly 180 rising juniors and seniors from across the state spend four weeks living on the UT campus (May 31–June 27 in 2026) for advanced study, laboratory experience, and research in modern science, mathematics, and engineering. Every admitted student receives a scholarship: full scholarships cover all tuition and fees, while partial scholarships cover a portion of the fees and families pay tuition. The program states that students are not required to pay for anything out of pocket while attending. ## What You'll Do - Take advanced STEM coursework taught on a university campus - Gain laboratory experience and conduct research in modern science and mathematics - Earn five hours of UT college credit (INPG 100 plus two sections of INPG 200) upon successful completion - Live on the Knoxville campus for four weeks with high-achieving scholars from across Tennessee ## Who Should Apply Tennessee public, private, or home-school students who are current sophomores or juniors (rising juniors and seniors) with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, at least one year of high-school laboratory science, and one year of Algebra. Students apply through Tennessee's unified Governor's Schools application with two teacher recommendations and a counselor verification; applications for the 2026 session opened October 1 and closed December 5, 2025. ## Outcomes Scholars finish with transcripted University of Tennessee credit, hands-on research and lab experience, and the statewide recognition of a Tennessee Governor's School credential.
